A former Kitchener Rangers captain is headed to the professional ranks on a more permanent basis.

Dan Kelly has been signed to an NHL contract for the 2019-20 season.

Kelly officiated games in the OHL last season, and also saw some time in the AHL.  It is expected he will see more time in the AHL, as is normal for newly-hired referees, but he could see some NHL games later on in the season.

Kelly played 235 regular season games through five seasons (2005-2010) with the Blueshirts, serving as captain for the final year and a half of his tenure.

He scored 11 goals and 82 points in the season, and got 17 playoff points.

The majority came as part of Kitchener's run to Game 7 of the Western Conference Final against the stacked Windsor Spitfires in 2010.
