Ontario Provincial Police want you to stay safe on waterways this long weekend.

Sgt. Andy Bishop said OPP are encouraging people to be prepared.

"Prepare your vessel properly, make sure its maintained. We also want people to understand the risks involved. The water is very cold - you can travel a very long way, and you can be far from help. Ensure that there'd a PFD available for every person on the boat. Leave the alcohol at home - there's no place for alcohol on the boat, or drugs for that matter."

Bishop said chances are, you'll run into an OPP marine unit on the water.

"They'll want to see all your safety equipment - ensure you have everything from a whistle, flashlight, a paddle, an anchor, a fire extinguisher ... make sure you have it all ready and accessible."

Bishop said they want everyone to have a safe and happy long weekend.

Last Victoria Day long weekend, there was one fatality on the water.
