A crash involving a stolen vehicle in Kitchener saw thousands of people in the dark Wednesday morning.

Regional police said the vehicle struck a hydro pole in the Caryndale Crescent area.

Police said just before 6:00 a.m., police got a report of a warm-up theft at a home near Caryndale Drive and Hearthwood Drive.

The crash happened about 500 metres away from where the alleged theft took place.

Police said the vehicle hit a guide wire, and the suspect fled the area.

The vehicle took significant damage, but there wasn't much damage to the hydro pole.

KW Hydro reported a power outage in the area just before 6:30 a.m., with just over 2,200 customers impacted.

Power has since been restored.
