So far, so good when it comes to men's football teams in Waterloo Region.

The Laurier Golden Hawks (1-0) opened up their year with a 39-21 win over the Ottawa Gee Gee's (0-1) Sunday afternoon at University Stadium.

Levondre Gordon ran in a pair of touchdowns in the first half, leading the home side to a 23-7 lead going into halftime.

Gordon finished the day with 109 rushing yards, while Golden Hawks QB Tristian Arndt went 17-for-26 for 218 passing yards, one touchdown and an interception.

Kitchener's Will Amoah also made a mark, recording his first career interception in the win.

Reigning OUA MVP Kurleigh Gittens Jr. had a good day as well, nabbing 188 all-purpose yards on the day, 129 of which came through the air on eight receptions.

Ottawa's QB Alex Lavric finished with 250 yards passing, with a pair of touchdowns and a pick.

The win also extends Laurier's win streak over Ottawa to four games, dating back to 2011.

Meantime, the Waterloo Warriors (1-0) outlasted the Windsor Lancers (0-1) by a score of 53-37 in their opener at Warrior Field.

Tre Ford threw for six touchdowns  --- and ran in a 20 yard TD of his own --- in a game that was relatively over by halftime, when Waterloo went into the locker room with a 39-14 lead.

Four of Ford's TD passes went to Tyler Ternowski --- tying an OUA record --- on a night the wide out caught 11 passes for 289 yards.

One of them was an 83-yard catch-and-run to the house to put the Warriors up 32-0.

Ford finished 25-for-28 and 463 yards passing in the win, while Sam Girard impressed as well.

The Lancers' signal-caller threw for five touchdowns of his own on 478 yards passing, going 26-for-42.

In total, both offenses combined for over 1,100 yards and zero turnovers.

Both local squads will hit the road for Week 2.

The Golden Hawks are in Kingston to take on the Queen's Gaels Sunday, September 2.

The Warriors visit Toronto against the Varsity Blues for a Saturday night tilt on September 1.
