Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football running back Tanner Nelmes was one of 11 players around the OUA that was named an All-Rookie on Tuesday as the conference announced this year’s recipients on Tuesday.

Nelmes, a native of Guelph, Ont., made an impact on both offence and special teams for the purple and gold in his rookie campaign. He dressed in all eight games for the Hawks and carried the ball 11 times for 37 yards, averaging 3.4 yards per carry. His best performance came against the Windsor Lancers when he picked up 26 yards and seven attempts.

On special teams, he blocked a pair of punts for Laurier, one against York and one against Toronto, returning the block against the Varsity Blues for his first career OUA touchdown.

Nelmes becomes the 15th Golden Hawk to be named an OUA All-Rookie since the award was introduced back in 2013. This season, one player from each team was recognized with the distinction.
