Two mosquito traps tested positive this week for West Nile Virus in Kitchener. These are the first traps to test positive this season. Although the traps were both located in Kitchener, it is important for people to take precautions against West Nile virus throughout the region. West Nile virus has been detected in various locations across Ontario this season.

With the temperatures remaining warm and vacation season upon us, many people will be spending time outdoors. Public Health urges residents to take precautions when outdoors. Helpful suggestions for personal protection include:

  • Apply a repellant containing DEET or Icaridin. Follow manufacturers directions.
  • Never use DEET or Icaridin on a child younger than six months of age.
  • Wear light coloured, tightly woven long sleeved shirts, pants, socks, shoes and a hat.
  • Minimize time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn.
