WaterLoot 'mystery box' focuses on local businesses

A new subscription box, put together by three Laurier students, aims to support what is local.

The WaterLoot subsciption box focuses in on what we have up on offer here in Waterloo Region when it comes to snacks, food, or useful everyday items.

Cofounder Tyler De Sousa says selecting which businesses to include in their mystery boxes is still an evolving process.

"We really started just with places that we liked and that we knew were well-loved, local favourites. From there, we had people coming to us to ask to be involved and then we kept reaching out to more and more places, people kept recommending places to us."

He says they have already sold just shy of 100 boxes.

"They're sort of a monthly pre-order now, so the May boxes will ship out on Friday. We've already sold out of those, we've sold out of all our first two boxes as well, and we've sold out of one of our themed boxes as well, for self care."

De Sousa says each WaterLoot subscription box will have five to six different surprise items from different retailers.

"We've had things in the past -- fresh food, sweets, packaged food, pantry items. One of the favourites has been a take-out gift card for some of the take-out places that are still open. We also do some sort of thing that you can keep around, like a beeswax wrap is something we did recently."
