***Update: The watch was lifted just before 6 p.m. on Monday***
Environment Canada has lifted the severe thunderstorm warning and watch for Waterloo Region and surrounding areas.
The weather agency says conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms Monday afternoon and into the evening.
It expects local rainfall amounts near 50 mm, which may cause flooding in areas, and wind gusts up to 90 km/h. Isolated nickel sized hail is also possible in areas.
Environment Canada warns that strong wind gusts can pick up and toss loose objects, break tree branches and damage weak buildings.
Lightning also kills and injures Canadians every year, and the agency advises folks to stay indoors during a thunderstorm. Drivers are asked to watch out for reduced visibility and pooling and ponding on roads.
