Waterloo Regional Police have launched their annual Festive RIDE program.

Various checkpoints will set up on the region's roads to catch impaired drivers during the holiday season as well as raise public awareness.

Joe Couto is the Director of Government Relations and Communications for the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police who says this year there is a strong focus on those who drive high.

"This is really important for us this year with this RIDE program to get the message out that driving high does not make you a better driver," he said.

According to Couto, police across the province tend see more impaired drivers around the holiday season. He said it's due to people attending more social gatherings and drinking before making the wrong choice heading home.

"It's really important not to ruin, not only the season, but lives because it really is at the end of the day it's about saving lives." he added.
