The Waterloo Catholic District School Board has announced the passing of former Director of Education Michael Schmitt.
Schmitt served as interim director of the school board for the 2014-2015 school year. This was his final job before his retirement.
It is believed Schmitt passed away from a long battle with cancer.
Schmitt had a nearly four decade career in education. He started his career as a teacher in Belleville, eventually coming to Waterloo Region as the founding principal of Resurrection Catholic Secondary School.
In his retirement, Schmitt was an active volunteer in the community. Among many roles he served on the board and as president of Supportive Housing of Waterloo.
There has been an outpouring of support on social media to the reaction of Schmitt's death, many from notable members of the community.
Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of friend and community leader, Michael Schmitt. I've known Michael for over 30 years. He was an outstanding educator and a passionate community builder. My condolences to both his family & friends and also his @WCDSBNewswire family! https://t.co/n9NF9esavh— Berry Vrbanovic (@berryonline) January 11, 2019
This truly is heartbreaking. Michael was a champion of our homeless folks and Chair of the Board of @SHOWaterloo, I'm a board member and was blessed and honoured to work with him. His legacy of compassion has been felt far and wide. You will be missed by us all, my dear friend. https://t.co/r8gPIU7KRl— Brenda Halloran (@BrendaHalloran1) January 12, 2019
