Gather around the table in one Waterloo cafe this December to help support local food banks.

The Round Table Board Game Cafe says they are encouraging customers to use their purchasing power to help feed the tri-city area.

By adding a little more money onto the bill as a donation, all three cafe locations will pool these funds to buy food from a distributor at wholesale pricing to give to various food banks, including the Waterloo Food Bank.

Aron Murch, social coordinator for The Round Table, says the idea for this type of fundraising came from the cafe owner, Thomas Gofton.

"It's something that came to his mind a couple of months ago." says Murch, " We choose December specifically because it is the holiday season and it's a time of giving."

Gofton, who started The Round Table in Guelph in 2015, before expanding to Kitchener and Waterloo in 2019.

He says he wanted to get his business involved in helping the community.

"The Round Table is built on community, and I wanted to come up with a unique way to give back." says Gofton.

While there is no specific monetary target, Murch says the Round Table is hoping to raise as much as possible.

Although the event is ending in January, he encourages residents to support the local food banks long after the holidays are over.

"The main thing is that the food banks are looking for donations all year round." says Murch, "They're serving people twelve months of the year."

"We're doing everything we can to push that forward, but if there's anything I can leave people with, is to keep the food banks in mind."

Donations will be collected from now till Dec. 31st.
