Kitchener native and beach volleyball athlete, Sarah Pavan, has won Canada its first gold medal at the beach volleyball world championships in Germany.

Pavan and her partner Melissa Humana-Paredes, ranked sixth worldwide, beat American players April Ross and Alexandra Klineman, ranked fifth, for gold on Saturday morning.

With this win, the Canadian team has secured a spot in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

By coming in first, Pavan and Humana-Paredes also beat a previous best when they finished in fourth place for Canada in 2017
