Former Cambridge MPP and provincial transportation minister Kathryn McGarry has defeated Doug Craig to take over the mayor's chair in Cambridge.

Craig was trying for a sixth term as mayor.

He was first elected to that post in 2000.

McGarry tells 570 NEWS she is really excited to work with the new council.

"I'm pretty excited ... to work with the new people and really put a new fresh positive vision with this city."

McGarry received 47 per cent of the vote, Craig was second with 26 per cent.

You can find the results from Cambridge here. They were declared official on Wednesday afternoon.

Voting was extended by two hours due to online voting issues.
