Region reports 34 new COVID cases, another death Thursday

Region of Waterloo Public Health confirmed 34 new cases of the coronavirus on Thursday afternoon.

It raises the local total to 10,870.

There has also been another COVID-related death, a man in his 60s who lived at a congregate setting currently in outbreak, raising the death toll to 229.

The number of people being treated in hospital remains unchanged at 42, eight are in intensive care.

Here are some other updates from the region's dashboard:

  • 129 cases have screened positive for variants of concern - 11 are the U.K. strain - lineage to the other 118 has not been determined yet
  • The active caseload is down to 391
  • 10,237 resolved cases (94 per cent)
  • Over 377,000 tests have been done
  • 13,116 people in the region have been fully vaccinated - 2.23 per cent

  • Cambridge Memorial Hospital - Rehabilitation Unit
  • St. John Catholic Elementary School, Kitchener (12 cases)
  • St. Agnes Catholic Elementary School, Waterloo (six cases)
  • Food and beverage services 13 (two cases)
  • Congregate setting 31 (two cases)
  • Howard Roberston Public School (two cases)
  • Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary School (four cases)
  • Food processing 7 (five cases)
  • Grand River Hospital - 5North and 5South
  • The Village at University Gates long-term care - Wright Unit (three staff cases)
  • Congregate setting 30 (36 cases, one death)
  • Court at Laurelwood Retirement Residence (13 cases in residents, three in staff, two deaths)
  • Congregate setting 26 (21 cases)
  • The Village of Winston Park long-term care (seven cases in residents, eight in staff)
  • Derbecker's Heritage House long-term care (15 cases in residents, seven in staff)
  • Congregate setting 18 - multiple locations (123 cases)
  • Chartwell Westmount long-term care (74 cases in residents, 71 in staff, 19 deaths)

Meantime, the province reported 994 cases Thursday.

The rest of the provincial COVID-19 totals are posted below:

  • 304,757 total cases
  • 649 people are in hospital - 281 are in intensive care - 183 are on a ventilator
  • 287,424 resolved cases
  • 7,024 deaths (10 new)
  • 65,643 tests completed Wednesday - 11.11 million since January 15, 2020
